Mark Schatz & Bryan

McDowell

Mark Schatz and Bryan McDowell are the quintessence of Appalachian roots music.
Schatz's playing is so merged with celebrated bluegrass artists that it's hard to imagine the last quarter century of the genre without him. He's been the heartbeat and downbeat for Tony Rice, Tim O'Brien, and Nickel Creek. Recently, with Bela Fleck's "My Bluegrass Heart," he's been inspiring new audiences with new horizons.

McDowell, after unprecedented contest success, became one of the most in-demand sidemen in Nashville in the 2010s. He contributed to the stage and studio with Molly Tuttle, Sierra Hull, David Grier, Mountain Heart, and Section House. Now with his move to Baltimore, he continues to colaborate and innovate. He's steeped in the first generation bluegrass fiddling of his Western Carolina mentor Arvil Freeman, but no less adept in the improvisational frontiers of Sonny Rollins or Brad Mehldau.") Mark & Bryan have toured together extensively since their first meeting 12 years ago.

You know with credentials like these that you'll have a good time hearing Schatz and McDowell at a live event. They're generous and warm performers who elevate old time music to its highest form with an authoritative style. Bryan leverages his expressive vocals over fresh songs, and it doesn't matter which of their stack of instruments you're hearing, the magic is the same. Mark's genius bass lines and clawhammer delivery hit all the right flavor notes to let you walk away knowing what the bluegrass inner circle has known for a long time.....   these guys make you thankful to have ears.
